The throat chakra is the first of the three spiritual chakras. It is related to communication and expression of our creativity and thought. When balanced it enables us to speak our truth and to express who we are and what we need. It encourages listening to, and empowering, others.

Debunking the Stomach Acid Myth
Supporting foundations of health using a nutrient dense whole foods approach
What if I told you, “Heartburn almost never signals too much acid, and it may often be associated with too little?” How’s that for controversy! Contrary to what many doctors and big pharma would like us to believe, taking acid suppressing medications for heartburn, GERD and the likes is not addressing the problem its actually compounding to the cause of it!
Heartburn is very common, let’s face it we all know someone that suffers from heartburn, acid reflux or indigestion in one form or the other. As a Nutritional Therapist I like to ask why, look at the symptoms – heartburn – and ask myself what is causing this? We want to treat the cause not the symptom. So, let’s break this down.
WHY DO WE NEED STOMACH ACID ANYWAY?
Stomach acid plays many roles, a few of the major ones include:
• Promoting the digestion and absorption of many vital nutrients
• helping digest proteins by stimulating the production of the protein digestive enzyme Pepsin
• Preventing bacterial and fungal overgrowth
• Signalling the Lower Esophagael Sphincter (LES) to close tightly, preventing acidic stomach acidic fluid to escape into the lower part of the esophagus.
The last time we spoke, we discovered digestion is a north to south process, beginning in the brain, continuing in the mouth, onto the stomach and finally finishing in the small intestine and colon. The stomach is all about acid. Without the correct acidity (pH of 1 to 3), digestion cannot occur as it should. Nutrient cannot be broken down into absorbable components and proteins remain undigested.
As most bacteria cannot survive in a high acidic environment, with low acidic the stomach becomes vulnerable to bacterial invasion.
With low stomach acid, the pyloric sphincter (the valve between the stomach and the small intestine) will not open as the food needs to be properly acidified before passing onto the next digestive phase. With the valve not opening, food continues to sit in the stomach, it starts to putrefy, rancidify and ferment, eventually pushing up on the sphincter that sits between the oesophagus and the stomach, causing heartburn and reflux.
Low stomach acid can manifest in a myriad of signs and symptoms, many of which do not appear to be associated with something so simple as low stomach acid. Dr J Wright, the author of, ‘Why Stomach Acid is Good For You,” suggests, that even if you are eating the most nutrient dense and properly prepared diet, if you have low stomach acid you are not absorbing the nutrients. This can result in:
• Poor absorption of important minerals, vitamins and amino acids, leading to deficiencies
• Poor digestion of proteins, leading to malnutrition
• Bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and large intestine, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, ‘gas’, constipation, diarrhoea etc
• Skin disorders such as acne, dermatitis, eczema hives
• Gall bladder disease
• Rheumatoid arthritis
Unfortunately, contrary to what the media and popular belief, taking antacids and acid blockers is actually doing more harm than good. Whilst they certainly bring us temporary relief they can have serious side effects. By supressing acid production, they are exacerbating the most likely cause of heart burn and reflux - low stomach acid! As nutritional therapists, we look at more natural ways, healing with food, lifestyle changes and using natural supplements if we need to. Some first steps would be to:
1. Identify and eliminate the cause
Avoid alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, mints. Work out what foods trigger your symptoms. These could include onion, alcohol, nicotine, certain fruits, tomato, spicy foods. But remember we are all bio-individuals, so you need to work out the ones specific to you. What affects someone else might not affect you.
2. Use Vagal Tone TM | Essential Oils for Digestion
A blend of wildcrafted essential oils which when applied before meals helps to place the body in the parasympathetic state. When stress is on digestion is off. 3. Use Bitters and herbs to stimulate the stomach
Many natural health food stores will have liquid forms of these available. Examples are; dandelion, ginger, goldenseal root and yellowdock.
4. Include Bitter foods in your diet
Try adding foods such as; kale, nettles, dill, sesame, horseradish, watercress, parsley, radish, aloe, cilantro, arugula (rocket), bitter melon and gourd, Japanese eggplant, turmeric, fenugreek seeds, leafy greens, basil and lettuce into your diet.
5. Vinegar or lemon juice
Try one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in water at the start of your meal.
6. Digestive Enzymes
Whilst neither heartburn nor indigestion are not normally a result of lack of digestive enzymes, these may help relieve symptoms if taken with meals and are a better alternative to antacids or acid –blocking drugs.
7. Test for stomach acid
If none of these provide relief, you may need supplementation with Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and Pepsin. However, it is recommended that you work with a medical or health professional to ensure that it is safe for you to do so, as some medications can interact with HCl and pepsin supplements.
Kale is a descendant of wild cabbage. First cultivated in the form we know it, over 2,000 years ago in the Mediterranean. Not only great for digestion, due to its bitter qualities, the health benefits of kale are numerous. You will want to include kale in your diet for its; antioxidant qualities, anti-inflammatory benefits, cancer preventive benefits, cardiovascular support, detoxification support.
Nutritionally it has excellent sources of carotenes, vitamin C and B6 and manganese. It is a good source of fibre, calcium, potassium, vitamin E, B2, iron, vitamin B1, omega-3 fats, phosphorous, protein, folate and vitamin B3.
Look for kale that is firm, has deeply coloured leaves that look fresh, are unwilted and free from any signs of browning, yellowing or small holes. Smaller sized leaves will be more tender with a milder flavour. To store, wrap kale in a damp paper towel and place in the refrigerator crisper. Did you know that the longer you store kale, the more bitter it will become?
Rinse kale leaves under cold running water. Chop the leaves and stem into shape and sizes you want. Kale is very versatile, use raw it in your salads, your smoothies, lightly sauté it with fresh garlic sprinkled with lemon juice before serving, braise kale and apples then sprinkle with balsamic and chopped walnuts. Use steamed kale as a pizza topping or puree cooked kale with potatoes seasoned with salt, cayenne pepper and cumin.

Why did you enter the yoga world? Improve flexibility? Reduce stress? Relieve postural issues? For me it was simply to gain greater control and awareness of my body and movement capacity.
As a chiropractor I am acutely aware of the importance of having a regular movement practice. Our brains are wired to move and when we don’t get enough, our capacity for health, vitality and self-growth is limited.
In my experience, yoga has a strong focus on mobility and strength of the spine. This is very important because our spine is home to the most important system in our body, the nervous system. This is the communication highway that sends messages from your brain to every organ, muscle and joint and then sends update messages back to the brain to keep your body working and adapting. It is a highly complex system and is working at light speed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our current understanding is that there is a relationship between the quality of movement of the spine and the function of your nervous system. Areas of restricted movement in the spine can not only be painful or frustrating, but may also be having an underlying effect on your nervous system’s capacity to keep running smoothly. Large breakdowns in our health often stem from a culmination of small dysfunctions over time, whether caused by physical restrictions and poor movement patterns, poor eating habits or negative self-talk. Dealing with small issues now will always trump waiting until they become big ones.
So during your next yoga class, exercise session or even just daily movement I invite you to take note of any restrictions you may feel. Perhaps one hip is more flexible than the other, or you feel more control of one shoulder over the other. These subtleties may indicate an underlying movement issue within your spine. Now I’m not some hippy that thinks we all need to live out in the scrub in a shack as an experiment to see who can survive, although some days that seems rather tempting.
I do think that we need to ask the question… Why do people continue to freely poison themselves?
I see it all the time, people pushing trolleys brimming with toxic chemicals. Pre-packaged food that is full of preservatives, chemical filled cleaning products, so called ‘fresh’ fruit and veges coated in pesticides, chemical filled personal care products, meat that has a chemical added to give it that ‘red’ look. Australia imports millions of products from overseas which contain chemicals that have been banned for use here in Australia, but yet the government allows these imports to come in, be put on supermarket shelves and bought by the unknowing public…instead support your local Toowoomba Farmers’ Market and buy organic products direct,every Saturday from 8am-1pm on Annand Street in the Walton Stores carpark.
Consumers need to start to educate themselves to read labels; we should have the right to know where our goods that we purchase come from and what precisely is in it. I know people are time poor and want to get in and out of the supermarket quickly, but that is no bloody excuse not to read what you are taking home to your family to consume or apply to their body.

If you read a label and you don’t know what ingredient it is, or have never heard of it, google it and you will be shocked. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient on a label or you see numbers….put it down and back away!!!
I hear people say a lot that natural and organic items are too expensive, what a load of sh#t! I notice people don’t hesitate to spend hundreds of dollars when purchasing clothing, perfume, handbags, shoes, alcohol the list goes on…..but when it comes to purchasing items that go into your body, well that’s a whole different story.
People also comment that natural and organic skincare doesn’t have that ‘pretty’ smell….DUH!!! That is because it is made from plants, not from man-made synthetic ingredients produced in a lab. If you want a product that smells like a fairy farted honeysuckle, then you definitely need to educate yourself about what you are applying to your skin and hair. Natural and organic skincare should not contain chemicals ,artificial fragrances or additives. It will have a nice smell which will be from the pure essential oils that are used to add fragrance and the health benefits associated with the oils.
Also I would like to bring to your attention to read labels on natural and organic products as some of these ‘so called’ products do contain synthetic ingredients, so it can be quite misleading. I will point out that Positively Organic Skincare does NOT contain any synthetic ingredients, we follow the guidelines that the ACO (Australian Certified Organic) board endorses, but being a small family owned business, the cost to certify our products are currently not viable for us at this point in time.

“There are times when the quickest way to a destination is not the most obvious or direct route. When you have the wise eyes of the Mother watching over your journey, she will nudge you to take an alternative route if there is a big hole in the middle of the road up ahead – even though you can’t see it as yet. Perhaps you have had an experience driving home when you felt that your usual route wasn’t such a good idea. You either trusted your gut and went a different way, only to find out later there was a big accident and backed up traffic on your traditional route. Or you ignored your intuition, only to end up at that big accident, and stuck in the backed up traffic!
This mundane example can apply in larger circumstances. Perhaps you are trying for entry into a particular course, or applying for particular jobs, only to find that again and again you are knocked back. Now, yes, if this is truly in your heart, then you must continue. Perhaps the knock backs are helping you to build trust and self belief, which you will need to be able to do the job that you are seeking, without losing your inner connection and spirituality. This might be so, especially if the company you are eventually going to work for has some dark or negative tendencies in its corporate culture. Perhaps part of your undercover spiritual work in taking on an administrative role there, for example, is to help balance the spiritual light in the organization. You would need a strong inner light to be able to do that, and not become depressed and disconnected in that toxic culture. Circumstances in your life might be building your inner light so that you are ready for your future work. This happens more often than we might expect.
However, if something is not truly in your heart, but more in your mind, out of habit or not seeing any other way, then you may well find closed doors. If you were to glimpse behind those doors, you would notice Mother Mary on the other side, shutting them firmly in your face, after whispering to you to go down the hall and try a different door!
Our Lady Of Divine Direction arises when you are pursuing a path and there is going to be a nudge in a different direction. This is either coming soon or has just happened. This oracle say s to trust in that, and the reason for it will become apparent later on. It might be to build yourself spiritually, or it could simply be a timing issue. This chakra enables us to recognise and unite with the sacred, and to live from a place of love and compassion towards everyone and everything. To have deep love and acceptance for other people, and for ourselves. To connect with others and release all judgement – creating safe and supportive relationships.
Hurtful situations such as betrayal or divorce, grief caused by loss (of a person, pet, relationship), emotional abuse, abandonment, and rejection can all wound the heart and cause imbalance in this energetic centre.
Anahata chakra is affected by thoughts and beliefs about:
- Relationships – with parents, siblings, step parents, grandparents, children, friends, lovers, co-workers, employers, teachers, strangers, peers, and pets.
- Love – divine love from the universe, from your higher self. Romantic, platonic, and familial love.
- Attachment – co-dependency, dysfunctional relationships, addictions or obsessions with others.
- Forgiveness – towards yourself, another person, organisations, countries, past events.
The heart chakra teaches us to love unconditionally. To forgive, to let go of grudges and hurt, to trust ourselves and others. It encourages us to find deep acceptance and compassion for others, and to understand that when people are hurtful towards us that it is coming from a deep pain inside them. Anahata chakra enables us to recognise that we are part of something larger, that we are all interconnected and divine beings. It also teaches us to love the self, and to say “no” at times so that we can attend to self-love and self-nurturing.
